What a delightful and exciting experience! It was a pleasure to do a live interview with the woman that I call “the first lady of physical fitness, wellness and longevity.” After all, she is married to Jack LaLanne!!! Any more explanations? If you need a reminder, he is a role model for living and promoting an active and well-nourished body, mind and spirit. Jack, born in 1914, and Elaine born in 1926, have a company called BeFit Enterprises that promotes a variety of life-adding products such as the Jack LaLanne Power Juicer, a line of clothes for exercising, and even skin-care. Jack and Elaine have been having fun and working together since 1954. Wow! Who has not had the opportunity to see their educational and inspirational 30 minute infomercial on juicing? I watch it in South Florida in Spanish on the Hola TV, the local station where I do a wellness segment called Healthy Equations™ or Ecuaciones De Salud™ (in Spanish).
Arminda Seco, producer and director of the “La Vida Es Bella” or “Life Is Beautiful” live daily radio magazine on 1190 AM (11Q – La Primera) and I interviewed Mrs. Elaine LaLanne with some very interesting questions. First, we wanted to know what inspired her to adopt an active and fit lifestyle. When Elaine met Jack way back in 1951, he made the first impression. Elaine had scheduled Jack for the television show she coordinated in San Francisco, California. During the one and a half hour show, Jack performed push-ups. Amazing! Jack, who three years later became Elaine’s husband was not love at first sight. Well, this couple is an excellent example of personal discipline and commitment to living life at it’s best and investing wisely in their body, mind and spirit.
Mrs. Elaine LaLanne shared three habits that should be a part of your personal Healthy Equations™ or Ecuaciones De Salud™ for adding health to your life: 1) Exercise. 2) Nutrition. 3) Faith. “Moderation is a key. Also, it is best not to snack between meals,” explained Mrs. LaLanne. Like her husband says, “exercise is king, nutrition is queen and together they make a kingdom.”
Jack and Elaine have both authored books and resources that encourage people to guard and protect their greatest asset: Their body. Mrs. LaLanne believes that shortcuts to weight loss do not address the need to make daily deposits for gaining the wealth of great health. Surgery for losing weight or correcting excessive body fat are two examples of these shortcuts. These do not cause people to make life-adding choices. Instead, many return to the habits that led to the weight gain in the first place.
Regarding the North American expression of “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” Mrs. LaLanne commented that apples are rich in nutrients that add health to the body.
To end our bilingual interview, which was recorded and will be available via podcast soon, we asked Mrs. LaLanne if Jack and Elaine had added or subtracted any habits that have improved their personal wellness. She emphasized the fact that they have added the joy of growing together as a couple. Thankfully, they have not had to subtract habits.
